Cape York

CAPE YORK

The dream, like many people was getting to the northern most tip of Australia.

Well we did.

The road turned feral as we left Cooktown, but this was all part of the adventure, seeing Australia.

We had never really seen rock art out in the wilderness, maybe an

Aboriginal painting on our accountants office wall, but to climb up a rocky mountain

out of the little town of Laura in the heart of Cape York Peninsula, to see Quicken Rock Art

was truly amazing.

We had no idea that the rock art held the stories and culture of traditional owners way of life over

thousands of years. This opened up a whole new world for us to go and see, and find more.

We crossed the Jardine River on the ferry and heard stories of crocodiles taking dogs off the bank.

We had not encountered a crocodile yet, and we were looking forward to it.

As we reach the Top of Australia, expecting a fanfare, coffee shop and all the trimmings,

never imagined just to clobber over rocks and hold onto a metal post that show we had made it.

Mission Accomplished.

This trip had only wet our appetite and the desire to see more...

So, we purchased a boat, to get up and personal withe crocodiles and set off for Lawn Hill

Boodjamulla NP in the gulf country in north west Queensland.

Lawn Hilll Gorge with emerald green cold water is set below towering sandstone cliifs, many shades

of green lush vegetation and only freshwater crocodiles, so in with the canoe and some hijinks

down the canoe portage.

Across the Great Top Road, according to some travellers we met recently, there is a visable road and camps spots

on the way.

When we crossed we virtually made our owm track and the water crossing at Leichhardt Falls was cross at own risk.

We plan to go again, just to witness the changes. We really hope there isn't any.

We do like the unspoilt wilderness...bit selfish I know.
